Title: Associate Director, Patient Education

Reports to: Director of Operations

Location: NATF’s office is located in Brookline, Massachusetts, near the Longwood Medical Area. This candidate may work remotely but must live in New England as occasional travel to our office in Brookline, MA will be required.

Hours: Full-time salaried position with comprehensive benefits

NATF is looking for a passionate individual to enhance and expand our patient education pipeline. The ASsosciate Director of Patient Education is responsible for developing, editing, updating, and engaging with all patient-facing content for NATF’s primary communication channels (i.e., our website, print materials, and social media). The desired candidate must have the ability to self-direct and make this role and the patient education strategy their own.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Content Development: Develop all patient/consumer-facing content and education across NATF’s online and print platforms. 
    • This content may include…
      • Articles on the NATF website
      • Patient information packets
      • The Beat, NATF’s bimonthly patient newsletter
      • The Patient Pulse, NATF’s monthly webinar
      • Comprehensive patient education initiatives/campaigns
      • Additional patient-facing materials (videos, pamphlets, help with infographic material, etc.)
    • Identify gaps in consumer/patient information offerings
    • Collaborate with clinicians, patients, and external partners/consultants on content development and special projects
    • Review and update patient-facing content on an ongoing basis to ensure quality, accuracy, readability, and cultural appropriateness of content and design
    • Ensure that consumer/patient information is consistent with medical evidence base (e.g., clinical practice guidelines, consensus statements, position statements, and policies)
    • Work with marketing staff to develop compelling copy for patient-facing social media and email outreach 
  • Educational Programming: Develop, support, and expand NATF’s pipeline of patient programs, social media programs, and resources, including:
    • Support groups
    • Ask the Expert, NATF’s live quarterly Q&A forum
    • Live or web-based patient programs
  • As Needed: 
    • Assist in grant writing and submission for patient-facing programs
    • Provide on-site support at fundraising and educational events

Job Requirements

  • Empathy for patients with chronic and/or invisible illnesses
  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, health/medical communication, or healthcare/science-related field strongly preferred but not required
  • 3-5 years of experience with medical/health terminology and writing; nonprofit experience preferred but not required
  • Strong written and oral communication skills across print and digital platforms
  • Knowledge of medical terminology/concepts and ability to accurately translate concepts into understandable and effective consumer/patient information
    • Ability to translate medical terms into everyday language that patients can understand
    • Familiarity with accessibility and cultural issues a plus, along with knowledge of issues related to thrombosis and related cardiovascular diseases, healthcare education, and patient advocacy 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and working knowledge of digital communication tools, including WordPress or similar content management systems and social media platforms
  • Some travel required

  • Enthusiastic about working with patients/the public
  • Comfortable and enjoys working on a small team
