Preventing Pulmonary Embolism and Stroke: Safe and Effective Use of DOACs

Pulmonary embolism remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients both while in the hospital and in the early postdischarge period. The options for thromboprophylaxis have increased since the advent of the direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs).

Join us in this live symposium as Dr. Samuel Goldhaber and a panel of experts explore strategies designed to optimize prevention of both pulmonary embolism and stroke in at-risk patients. They will discuss best practices to manage anticoagulation-associated bleeding, as well as best practices to reduce the risk of rehospitalization in at-risk patients.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for cardiologists, emergency medicine physicians, internal medicine physicians, hospitalists, and hematologists and oncologists.

Goal Statement

The goal of this program is to increase knowledge regarding evidence-based recommendations for thromboprophylaxis in hospitalized acutely ill patients and in the early postdischarge period.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will have increased knowledge regarding the:

  • Burden of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in post-hospital discharge period
  • Clinical recommendations for VTE prophylaxis in hospitalized acutely ill patients
  • Evidence regarding the role of DOACs in the prevention of thromboembolic events in hospitalized acutely ill patients
  • Current strategies to manage urgent DOAC-associated bleeding
