Alfonso Tafur

Alfonso J. Tafur, MD, MS, MBA is the Director of Vascular Medicine at Endeavor Health, formerly NorthShore University HealthSystem, and the Program Director of the University of Chicago-Endeavor Health Vascular Medicine Fellowship. He is also a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.
Originally from Guayaquil, Ecuador, Dr. Tafur comes from a three-generation family of physicians. He completed his medical training in Ecuador before specializing in Internal Medicine and Vascular Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
He later earned a Master’s in Clinical and Translational Sciences from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and a Healthcare MBA from Loyola University Chicago Quinlan School of Business.
An accomplished researcher, Dr. Tafur has authored approximately 200 publications and has over 10,000 citations.
His work focuses on thrombosis prevention and perioperative anticoagulation, contributing to national and international guidelines on venous thrombosis care, perioperative anticoagulation, and COVID-related anticoagulation. He has participated in practice-changing clinical trials, including ADAM, EVE, MICHELLE, and HEP-COVID.
Dr. Tafur serves on The Joint Commission Thrombosis Advisory Panel and co-chairs the SSC Subcommittee on Perioperative and Critical Care Thrombosis and Hemostasis for the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
He is also a member of the ISTH panel on integrating Artificial Intelligence into thrombosis care. His work is dedicated to advancing value-based healthcare and improving patient outcomes through education, research, and healthcare strategy.
