Driving Early Adoption Through Clinician Engagement: How a User Group Advanced Development of a Device

An emerging innovator in diagnostic technologies partnered with VLN to host a hands-on user group and test  a novel device designed to provide rapid, point-of-care coagulation results. This session was an opportunity to gather candid feedback from those most likely to use the device in high-stakes clinical settings. A diverse cross-section of  frontline clinicians participated, including physicians, nurses, and pharmacists representing cardiology, neurology, pathology, emergency medicine, and critical care.

Objectives

  • Provide company with expert feedback from clinicians in key specialties

  • Identify use cases for device across hospital settings (ED, OR, ICU, neurology, cardiology, and transfusion medicine)

  • Assess perceived barriers to adoption and attributes that drive clinical value

  • Facilitate direct, hands-on interaction with the device to assess usability and workflow fit

  • Understand processes for integrating a new diagnostic device into hospitals and health systems

Key Insights & Outcomes

  1. Workflow Integration Determines Success
Participants stressed that ease of use and seamless fit into existing workflows are paramount. Devices requiring minimal training and rapid turnaround were favored, particularly in critical care and emergency settings.

  2. Clinical Value Beyond Speed
While rapid results were highly valued, clinicians emphasized the device impact will hinge on demonstrable improvements in patient management decisions, such as guiding anticoagulation therapy adjustments or transfusion practices.

  3. Adoption Hinges on Multidisciplinary Buy-In
Pharmacists, nurses, and physicians each highlighted different considerations (usability, data accuracy, cost implications). Successful adoption will require engaging all stakeholders early in the process to avoid bottlenecks at hospital committee levels.

Regulatory and Economic Pathways MatterBeyond clinical utility, participants noted that clear pathways for institutional approval and reimbursement will be critical to scaling adoption across health systems.
