Vasculearn Network VTE Support Groups

Vasculearn Network (VLN), formerly North American Thrombosis Forum (NATF), has been running patient support groups for more than two decades. Founded by Dr. Samuel Goldhaber, the blood clot support group originated in person at Brigham and Women’s Hospital but pivoted to a virtual format with the onset of COVID-19. eTransitioning online expanded access to patients and caregivers worldwide, creating a vital community for those facing the physical, emotional, and psychosocial burdens of venous thromboembolism (VTE).

The Challenge

Patients with blood clots often experience fear of recurrence, uncertainty about prognosis, mistrust of the healthcare system, and difficulty navigating treatment options. Feelings of isolation are common, particularly among newly diagnosed patients or those living with long-term complications such as post-PE syndrome and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). Existing educational interventions alone were not sufficient to address these needs.

The Solution: VLN VTE Support Groups

VLN created a network of specialized VTE support groups, each co-facilitated by a clinician and VLN staff member to ensure accuracy, inclusivity, and psychological safety. Current offerings include:

  • Blood Clot Education Group – focuses on ongoing education

  • Blood Clot Support Group – provides emotional support during the

  • Women’s Support Group – addresses sensitive issues such as pregnancy, contraception, and menstruation

  • LongPE/CTEPH Support Group – for patients with chronic complications after a PE

  • Spanish-Speaking Support Group – provides culturally and linguistically tailored support for patients and caregivers whose first language is Spanish, hosted by a Spanish-speaking clinician

Planned expansions: additional groups for caregivers, LGBTQIA+ patients, and young adults

Impact and Outcomes

VLN’s support groups have become one of the largest and most impactful patient engagement initiatives in VTE care, reaching far beyond the individuals who attend live sessions.

  • Since expanding online, tens of thousands of patients and caregivers have engaged with VLN’s support group ecosystem—from live meetings to on-demand educational materials.

  • In 2024 alone, 11,000+ patients and caregivers accessed educational resources tied directly to our support group programming.

  • Post-event surveys consistently demonstrate a 9/10 satisfaction rating, with 100% of participants reporting improved understanding of their condition and trust in the information provided.

Participants describe the groups as lifelines that combine expert medical guidance with emotional support, and repeatedly request more frequent sessions to meet demand
