Clot Chronicles: 2018 NATF Summit

Dr. Sam Goldhaber discusses the upcoming 2018 NATF Summit and the importance of understanding the connection between diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and thrombosis.

Hello, this is Dr. Sam Goldhaber. I’m president of NATF and I’m here to tell you today about our upcoming Thrombosis Summit in September 2018 in Boston. The date of the Summit is September 26. It will start at 5:30 in the evening with dinner and will continue until about nine o’clock at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel.

The topic is one we have not covered in previous Thrombosis Summits. It’s going to deal with diabetes and metabolic syndrome and their relationship to thrombosis. The reason we chose to focus on diabetes and metabolic syndrome is that we’re having a pandemic or maybe even an epidemic of increase in diabetes and metabolic syndrome. This is because the American lifestyle is just too sedentary. We don’t have very good dietary habits as a nation. We don’t exercise as much as we should and what we’re finding as a result is an increase in diabetes, an increase in obesity.

This increase in obesity is not just a cosmetic problem potentially, but it also results in great physiological consequences. The type of obesity and metabolic syndrome leads to more inflammation. Inflammation leads to thrombosis. Thrombosis leads to heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism.

So, we have to do more in order to reduce the consequences of diabetes and metabolic syndrome and in this Summit we are tackling the diabetes problem from all the possible angles. We’ll talk about ways to treat diabetes more effectively. We’re even going to discuss the important topic of racial disparities that in certain races and certain lower socioeconomic strata patients do not get access to modern and expensive therapies that can be used to treat diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

NATF in addition to being an organization that focuses on education we’re also advocates for patients. So, I recommend highly this upcoming Thrombosis Summit, September 26, in Boston. You can register at this time online on our website.

This is Dr. Sam Goldhaber signing off for the Clot Chronicles and for this important announcement about our Thrombosis Summit.
