What the Heck is CTEPH?
This month, we welcome Dr. William Auger for an overview of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, better known as CTEPH. Dr. Auger spent more than 30 years of his career at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) focusing on the evaluation and management of patients with CTEPH and pulmonary disorders and developing one of the leading CTEPH programs in the world. In 2018, Dr. Auger retired from UCSD as a Professor of Clinical Medicine and accepted a faculty appointment at Temple University in Philadelphia until 2021. He now serves as an Emeritus Professor at UCSD.
In this webinar, Dr. Auger discusses:
- The definition of CTEPH and its relationship to acute thromboembolic disease
- How CTEPH develops and how common it is
- How CTEPH is diagnosed
- What can be done for patients with CTEPH
Key Takeaways:.
- CTEPH is under-recognized and under-diagnosed.
- Selecting patients who are appropriate candidates for surgery is critical to success.
- If you have CTEPH, you should be referred to a center with CTEPH expertise to help determine if you’re a good candidate for surgery.
- Medical (nonsurgical) treatment is indicated for disease that has been confirmed as inoperable.
- There is an evolving role for a procedure called pulmonary angioplasty in the treatment of CTEPH.
