ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION/STATEMENT OF NEED

To address healthcare/practice gaps in care, the University of Florida, the Heart Rhythm Society, and PeerView Institute for Medical Education conducted a quality improvement initiative aimed at addressing barriers to DOAC use at the practice, provider, and patient levels. This 30-minute educational opportunity shares how the quality improvement initiative came together and what happened during and after the project. By the end, learners will be able to better recognize the burdens of untreated nonvalvular AF, understand the barriers to optimal use of anticoagulants, and learn strategies to overcome these barriers by implementing their own quality improvement initiatives.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of family medicine physicians, general internal medicine physicians, cardiologists, advanced practice clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other clinicians involved in the care of patients with atrial fibrillation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the burden and consequences of untreated NVAF
  • Assess barriers to suboptimal use of anticoagulants among prescribers and patients with NVAF
  • Employ guidelines, new data, tools, and quality improvement strategies to overcome barriers to the evidence-based and guideline-directed use of DOACs in patients with NVAF
